In June 2004, the Shandong Highway Information Management System constructed by CVIC SE was formally connected and put into operation. This actualized unified tolling, monitoring and communicating procedures within the 2,319 kilometer expressway network. This is the largest-scale intelligent management system for expressways in China. A five-layer structure and advanced middleware techniques were adopted for comprehensive management of the whole expressway.
After the system was put into operation, proceeds from tolls increased by nearly 30% while the accident rate caused by inclement weather declined by 32%. Traffic efficiency was increased, with twice tolling instead of four times within 500 kilometers on average.
